Lanterns is a grounded, noir-inspired mystery drama for HBO, developed as part of James Gunn and Peter Safran's rebooted DC Universe.

Created by showrunner Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, The Leftovers), and acclaimed comic writer Tom King, the show blends superhero mythology with the gritty tone of a prestige crime thriller like True Detective.

Premise

The series moves away from vast space battles to tell an Earth-bound, "buddy-cop" mystery. It focuses on intergalactic law enforcers Hal Jordan and John Stewart—members of the Green Lantern Corps, an ancient peacekeeping order empowered by ring constructs.

When a cryptic murder takes place in the heartland town of Rushville, Nebraska, Hal and John are drawn in to investigate. What initially appears to be a local crime unravels into a dark, sprawling extraterrestrial conspiracy with massive implications for Earth and the universe beyond.

Rather than heavy CGI space spectacles, Lanterns grounds its heroes in real-world friction. The show uses a non-linear mystery structure to explore generational divides, duty, and fear, using the cosmic police framework to dissect human relationships and terrestrial secrets.
